Balisong

"Balisong" is the tagalog (dialect from the Philippines islands) name used for the famous butterfly knives, those folder knives the handle of which consists of two mobile branches.

The best links about Balisong are here.

Pied Du Roy

The Pied Du Roi (or Roy, ancient French word for king) is a knife model which dates from the XVIIIth century. As it really looks like a balisong, we can assert that the origin of the Balisong is not sure and maybe doubt about the Filipino origin.

This model is exposed in the Cutlery Museum of Thiers (France).

Collector

Benchmade is the most famous & respected Balisong brand.
On each side, two models from this cutlery : a wee-hawk blade with zamak handles, and a tanto blade with "stainless" handle.

On the other extreme, with a very low quality, "made in china" Balisong can be found at a very cheap price. Below, three knives bought for less than 2 USD on a market in Shanghai, China.

Folder Knives

The main interest of the Balisong detailled above consists of its one hand opening capability. Moreover, its opening can be very fast.

With a short training, it is also possible to open some folder knives with only one hand, in a fast move of the wrist. It depends on the inerty of the knives, and of its closing safety system.

The following knives can be opened in one fast move. On the top part of the photo, the Monarch Folder of Benchmade, below a Sciko model bought in China at a very intersting price.
